If the NFL Playoffs started today...

Wednesday, Oct, 30 2013

With (just about) half of the 2013 NFL Season in the books and the month of November looming, we are closer to the Playoffs than the Preseason.  So what if the playoffs started today?

NFC
#1.) Seattle Seahawks (7-1) – Harvin coming back as Rice goes down.  Offense is biggest concern.
#2.) New Orleans (6-1) – Visit to Seattle on December 2nd could determine home field.
#3.) Green Bay Packers (5-2) – Took advantage of October going 4-0 for the month.  In great position for 3rd straight NFC North title.
#4.) Dallas Cowboys (4-4) – How can anyone be scared of them come the post season?
#5.) San Francisco 49ers (6-2) – After early season hiccup, looking like a NFC Favorite other the last few weeks.
#6.) Detroit Lions (5-3) – Thanksgiving day circled.  So is draft day for defensive purposes.

JUST OUT
Carolina Panthers (4-3), Chicago Bears (4-3), & Arizona (4-4)

AFC

#1.) Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) – In the most “under-used” phrase of the week, Chiefs have quadrupled their win total from last year.
#2.) Cincinnati Bengals (6-2) – Packer fans scream “should have lost to GB” while Bengals fans scream “should have beat Chicago.”
#3.) New England Patriots (6-2) – Watching them and trying to figure out how they are 6-2 = SMH
#4.) Indianapolis Colts (5-2) – The coolest thing about this is who is the 5-seed.  Play the video again?
#5.) Denver Broncos (7-1) – Broncos & Chiefs in weeks 11 & 13. Can’t wait
#6.) San Diego Chargers (4-3) – 3-teams from the AFC West?  This definitely won’t hold up…right?

JUST OUT
New York Jets (4-4), Tennessee Titans (3-4), Baltimore Ravens (3-4),  Oakland Raiders(3-4), & Miami Dolphins (3-4).

WIAA Level 1 Football Previews

Thursday, Oct, 24 2013

The High School Football playoffs take the field for Level 1 Friday and Saturday.  Here are a look at the games from the area I am looking forward to the most.

5.) #6 Superior vs #3 Hortonville, Saturday 3pm at D.C Everest – Division 2, Group A

Despite being an undefeated conference champion, Hortonville got tossed down to the 3-line and drew the unfortunate matchup with Superior.  Because of travel, that game will be played at a neutral site.  Good news for Hortonville; a win and they will be in-line to host at Level 2.  Bad news; Menominee could also invoke the travel clause and that game could be at a neutral site.  Polar Bears had the leading passer and rusher in the Bay Conference.  Superior is dealing with injuries which could hurt their chances to advance.

4.) #5 Little Chute @ #4 Peshtigo – Division 4, Group D
After getting blown out early by Xavier, the Mustangs have been much improved with close loses to Waupaca and Freedom.  Their defense has been the key to their recent performance.  Peshtigo went unbeaten in the M&O conference, but their best competition (Coleman & Crivitz) was from Division 6 schools.  Little Chute will need to get the offense going with a potential game with Roncalli in Level 2.

3.) #5 Seymour @ #4 Medford – Division 3, Group A
Seymour outscored their opponents 292-20 in their 7 win while being outscored 58-20 in losses to Hortonville and West De Pere who could make deep runs this year. Medford puts forth a balanced offensive attack with nearly 1400-yards through the air and 1800-yards on the ground.  Winner likely to get Waupaca in this stacked Division3 grouping.

2.) #6 Notre Dame @ #3 Xavier - Division 3, Group A
The key for the Hawks will be Matt Ferris and the potent passing attack.  If they have an off-day, like week 8 against Waupaca, Xavier’s run could be done sooner than later. Not many teams have conference schedule full of higher division teams like Notre Dame.  Their 3-loses are to Bay Port (21-7), Ashwaubenon (17-14) & Southwest (13-10).  Whoever wins, likely matchups with West De Pere and Waupaca could be down the road.  Brutal.

1.) #5 Menasha @ #4 Green Bay Southwest – Division 2, Group A
This game may not just be the best matchup in the area this weekend, it could take the cake in the state!  It may be hard to find a matchup that has two teams with better “quality loses” than these two.  Menasha finished second in the VFA-South with a 7-point loss to champion Oshkosh North.  They are also the only team not to give D2 powerhouse Kimberly a game.  Southwest lost to FRCC Champion Ashwaubenon by 3 before falling to Bay Port last week.  Winner here gets Ashwaubenon, which will be a great one.

OTHER AREA GAMES:

Stevens Point @ Appleton North – Division 1, Group A
Will be meeting in the playoffs for the 6th time in last 7-years.  North’s only loss on the season was to Kimberly. SPASH made it into the post season despite a 3-4 conference record.  North won last year 17-14.

Wauwautosa West @ Kimberly – Division 2, Group C
One of the biggest questions of the post season is how Kimberly and Homestead ended up in the same group.  Despite that, all eyes will be on Level 3 when the teams meet.  Many feel this is the best Kimberly team since their multiple Championship run a few years back.  Cedarburg, who the Papermakers would see in level 2, will be no slouch.  Tosa West was just 2-4 in conference but their quality loses got them in the post season.  Their stay will not be long.

Antigo @ Waupaca - Division 3, Group A
Waupaca won will hoist another conference championship banner for football.  I wonder where they keep them all?  1990 was the last time they weren’t in the post season.  Most kids on the team were about 5-years away from being born.  Antigo finished 3-5 this year averaging 40-points a game in their wins and just 6-point in their losses.

Denmark @ Freedom – Division 4, Group D
Fighting injuries most of the year, Freedom was still able to pick up a 3rd place finish in the solid Eastern Valley Conference, finishing behind D3 Title contenders Xavier and Waupaca.  With Nathan Peters appearing to be back in the groove, Freedom could make a run similar to last year’s State Semifinal appearance.  Denmark was outscored 135-14 in their 3-conference losses.

Campbellsport @ Wrightstown – Division 4, Group D
Another solid season for Wrightstown has them in a familiar spot in the post season.  A look-ahead possible matchup with Freedom would be fun with the future conference opponents.  O-P large put 5 of their 8 teams into the post season always has their teams tested for this time of year.  Camplesport will be ready playing in a conference with Two Rivers, Plymouth and Kewaunee.

Brillion @ Kewaunee – Division 5, Group C
Despite a down year with a 3-4 conference record, the Lions find themselves in the post season once again.  They get Kewaunee who they lost to 41-14 just a couple weeks back. Kewaunee had a very nice bounce back year but were shutout by Roncalli last week in a battle of unbeatens.

Wabeno/Laona @ Shiocton – Division 6, Group B
Shiocton ran through the regular season outscoring their opponents 437-22 with 7-shutouts.  Looking ahead for the Chiefs; Algoma at Level 3, Edgar at Level 4, and a much anticipated match-up with St. Mary’s Springs…if they take care of business of course.

Would you do this trade? #HullYes or #HullNo

Thursday, Oct, 24 2013

Yesterday, someone brought to my attention a "rumored" trade that would bring Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald to the Packers.  I didn't see/hear anything about outside of that...until today.

I stumbled across the Greg Garber article on ESPN.com this morning.

The "trade" would bring Fitzgerald to the Packers in exchange for their 2014 2nd round pick, Rookie RB Jonathan Franklin, & WR Jordy nelson.

If you were Ted Thompson, would you do it?  #HullYes or #HullNo
