Turkey Update

Monday, Apr, 29 2013

I spent 3 days last week in the turkey blind. It seemed that the Gobblers were pretty HENNED up. What I mean by that is they roost with the hens, they feed with the hens and they follow them all day long. The challenge this presents is trying to call them in. They just won't leave their flock of hens. Since I was hunting with a bow I had to try to get them to come to me. I focused on calling to the hens in hoping that a Gobblre would be in tow, which doesn't always happen. I feel that the weather has delayed the nesting by a couple weeks. Due to snow still on the ground the hens don't seem to want to build a nest. The next couple of weeks could be very productive as the hens leave the Gobblers to lay their eggs. This leaves them lonesome and easier to call in. I plan to get out over the next couple of weeks to get a shot at a Gobbler.

Is Spring ever going to get here

Saturday, Apr, 13 2013

Well it's April 13 and winter is still wielding it's ugly head. As for turkey hunting the birds are still flocked up and searching for food. I have seen several birds that were harvested this last week and they are skinny. The birds are reacting to the call but having a decoy that you can give some movement to is a key. Maybe you hook up a string and give the decoy a pull just to move it a little. There is still plenty of snow where I hunt in Iola I hope I can get to my spot. I haven't even set out my blind yet oh well. I wish you all good luck if you head out to turkey hunt next week I will be out to check it out.

Turkey season just around the corner

Friday, Mar, 15 2013

Turkey season 2012 is just a few weeks away. With winter still hanging on it could make for an interesting first couple of weeks. The turkeys are bunched up and looking for food. Try to get out and scout where the turkeys are feeding. As the weather gets better old picked over cornfields will fill with birds I suggest you try to get out and sight in you turkey gun. You don't want to wait until the season starts. Make sure you have all your required licenses and tags as well. I can't wait for the warmer weather to get here.

It's time to get out

Friday, Mar, 1 2013

Well it seems winter just doesn't want to let go. But there is plenty to do in the outdoors. Ice fishing is still in full swing, there is plenty of snow to get out and snowshoe and of course my favorite shed hunting. Most of the bucks have shed their antlers by now and it's time to get out. With this much snow I concentrate on trails located between bedding and feeding areas. Try to look in the food sources as well. Also with spring just around the corner don't forget to purchase your new license that expires on March 31. Turkey season and the spring walleye run are not far off. MAke sure to get the latest on outdoor activities every Wednesday at 5 on Living The Outdoors.
